...now tragedy in Japan has produced images so awful... news can't resist showing, the viewers can't resist watching. It's just sort of things that get people tune into, rolling into huge numbers Perhaps, that's why, over the past weeks, sky news has been using images to create commercials for itself, adverts which edit the disaster into something not too similar to a movie trailer. a typical example ends like this.
(sky news ad 1)
Quite astonishing. They added do-me sound effects in devastation in case you don't think the reality is chilling enough. Chances are right now, someone in the office, working on a catchy jingle for apocalypse, which would be showing in HD. Im not idly saying that Sky News disaster sounds like a trailer for a drama serial. It literally sounds like one.... sometimes follows directly after it. Here is how it played out live, complete with what happened next.
(sky news ad 2)
Remarkable. you know what, when the news coverages segway seamlessly to an advert of Shaun Bean fantasy epic, maybe its time to ease off from the theatrics a bit.
anyway, after the Tsunami has devastated in Japan, other nations waited anxiously for the wave to cross the pacific to reach them. Thankfully, by the time it reached the Californian Coast, its force head, comparatively, almost completely dissipated. Although some of the news coverage still tried its best to make its scene dramatic.
(CBS news)
Dramatic video, there "Buddy" you know what?, this week my idea what constitutes dramatic video has changed a bit, "buddy".
In the early hours of the disaster, the internet is filled with sympathetic messages from almost everyone, with a notable exception, celebrity dance 50 cent who shared his thought on twitter. Thought like....
(50 cent tweet)
To be fair, to 50 cent, he actually mistyped that. What he really meant to say was "I'm a fucking idiot. Don't listen to me or buy my records, Don't even glance at me. I'm not worth travelling through the photoreceptor in your retina with. For 50 cents, I'm nothing. lol."
Anyway, the focus of the story soon shifted to the Fukushima National Nuclear Reactor. Once again, the news, the best to keep informed and terrified all though not in that order. The newspapers, front page rank, among the most alarming I've seen in my life time, ranging from MELTDOWN (daily mail, to NUCLEAR MELTDOWN ALERT (telegraph), and perhaps the most chilling of all is Daily Stars, BIG BRO GOES NAKED. you know what this means, soon the rods will be fully exposed.
Clearly the reactor situation is worrying, but the more you watch the news, stayed informed, the less informed you feel. Because they don't know how worrying it is. So all they can offer is sort of an amateur crash course, in nuclear physics. They demonstrated a number of reactors, using sophisticated CGI and unsophisticated polyesteling cups. It made it looks like a grim magic trick. Fox News, Glenn Beck simulated the nuclear reactors with some tubes of M & M with a sauce pan, that Heston Blumenthal told some idea of salad, I believe. While UK news displayed a number of alarming flashing diagrams, most of which soon exploded with shier excitement along with some worry-some visuals. They made their best to make you scared of milisieverts, which last week I have never heard, which now I find twice as frightening as Darth Vader glued to a shark.
Like most of us, I have no idea whether the fear is exaggerated or not. All I know is I am having an advanced atomic theory explained to me by people who last week were struggling to describe the color of Kate Middleton dress. And that definitely is frightening.
Charlie Brooker
